Healthier Pets. Happier Lives.™ with Hills Science Diet #HillsTransformingLives

I’m embarrassed to admit this, but 25+ years ago I did not take my cats to the veterinarian on a regular basis. When my cats weren’t well or when I noticed that something wasn’t right I brought them in right away, but preventative care was not routinely scheduled. Fast forward to the present… I’ve learned so much since then, and now I make sure my cats are seen by my veterinarian regularly.

When Lexy had her annual check-up in February, I found out she had adenomas in both ears and had a little bit of tartar build up on her teeth. When my veterinarian’s office called to remind me about her six month re-check I made sure to schedule an appointment. And I’m glad I did. Upon examination, Lexy had a yeast infection in both ears which could have led to further problems if not treated. She also lost a tooth, and I had a serious discussion with my vet about her weight.

All this talk about my weight is not amusing. Let's go home.

When she goes back in a month Lola will join us because it will be time for her re-check. I’ll be having a conversation with my vet about her weight as well. While Lexy is too heavy, Lola is too thin. (I really need them to meet somewhere in the middle!)

Healthier Pets. Happier Lives™

Hill’s® Science Diet®  is helping to raise pet parents understanding of the importance of preventative care and the role proper pet nutrition plays in the health and wellness of their pets. This initiative is called Healthier Pets. Happier Lives. Hill's has a full line of natural, healthy foods that can help address a variety of common pet health needs. Lola and Lexy have different needs, so I chose the Multiple Benefit variety which supports ideal body weight for cats with different body conditions.

Hills Science Diet

 Lexy dug right in!

The pieces are a little larger than their previous food, which slows Lexy down a little while she’s eating. I’m happy that there is a food that can meet both of my cat’s needs. Lola and Lexy need a healthy, nutritious, tasty food that will help them both maintain a healthy weight. I’ve tried feeding them each a different food which was unsuccessful and stressful for us all. Now mealtimes can be more enjoyable and less tense with one wholesome food that meets both of their needs.

Consistent vet visits are critical to your pets’ health

The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) recommends that all pets have a check up at least annually. While Hill’s believes pets should live life to the fullest through daily quality nutrition and regular vet checkups, they know vet visits and quality food can be expensive.

  9. Aw, Lexy! You look so not happy. The kitties here are the same way at the vet's. I'm glad you got some yummy food, though.

  10. Looking good in later life is all about eating well. These science /vet diets are wonderful things and mine even help my water issues and IF I wanted a weight issue at the same time! Still nothing matches the fun of eating fresh caught game, but when in need I'd go for this every time.

  11. We may be trying that Hills diet.....my vet told my Mom yesterday "we" needed to watch my weight! I'm going to STARVE to death! Seriously though I guess I don't want to be overweight so I'm willing to compromise. We also found out I had a yeast infection in my ear yesterday....the dreaded drops AGAIN - I had this yeast thing when Mom adopted me in February. Now it's back.

Here's to GOOD HEALTH and regular Vet Visits to make sure we are!
    Love, Teddy

  12. We tried the "Perfect Weight" formula and so far, our kitties love it. The kibble is bigger than the cats are used to. Since the switch, I've noticed the bigger kibble is harder for Bear to eat - he's lost six or more teeth despite me brushing his teeth daily (he lost the first one before his 2nd birthday). A couple years ago we switched from larger kibble to small and it seemed to help Bear eat less - but maybe it was just relative. Now he has a sister to chase around ;)

  13. I feel like the old adage "when you know better, you do better" applies to you and taking your cat to the vet. I don't think there was such an emphasis on preventative medicine back then. I think it is wonderful that Hills is helping promote good health! My cat is a senior, but we've always fed him hairball control, so I'm not sure which would be the best formula for him.

  14. I was really surprised to learn that a large number of cat owners don't feel the need to take their cats to the Vet regularly! I always took my girl Maggie to the Vet at least once a year and more as she got older. I'm sure this Hills food will help Lola and Lexy both get to their optimal weight!

  15. My girls tried Science Diet back in the day. Although the weight control worked for my oldest Precious, she didn't like it. I eventually had to switch. Don't feel too bad about vet visits. You learn and do better. At least you are on point now. :) Preventative medicine is better for your pet and costs way less.

  16. Is the line up of Hill's Science diet exclusively for cats? I like the diversity of their products specially the one which helps to prevent shedding.

  17. That photo of Lexy in the carrier is too adorable! We have also had the problem where one cat is too thin and the other too heavy. Great that this blend works for multiple issues.

P.S.: I also didn't take my first cat in for preventative care every year until he was a bit older. We all know a lot more now.

  18. I used to cat sit for my boss in NYC while he was traveling. His cat was on Hill's Science Diet for weight management and she loved it!

  19. It sounds like the girls are enjoying there Science Diet and we're not surprised. Dolly's kitty brofur Rhette did a trial on their new, at the time, Perfect Weight food, he's pretty chubby. He lost a little in the beginning but were just glad he's not gaining, he's just a very lazy cat so it's hard to get him to lose any weight, and he loves the food, won't eat anything else.. I hope your girls do well on their new food. Sandra and Dolly

  20. Thank you for sharing about the importance of preventative veterinary visits. And I have liked science diet foods in the past.

  21. Our juniors go annually, the seniors every six months. Our current batch need to try this and Peanut our senior refused to eat anything else! We tried but she was a Hill's girl!!!

  22. I'm happy to hear that you found a Hill's Science Diet formula that met the dietary needs for both Lexy and Lola. And I'm even happier to hear that they both love it! Thanks for sharing such an important topic.

  23. Oh, boy, Lexy does not look thrilled! Love that pic! Great review of a good brand! I do add the Hills Prescription I/D Digestive Care food (under our vet's direction) to my elder Husky's standard food as she is prone to bouts of GI issues and this really helps. We also give the Oral care as part of their treat regimen to help keep their teeth and gums healthy. Love the drawing for the $100 towards the next vet visit - who couldn't use that?! (P)awesome! Thanks for sharing this review!

  24. Great post to highlight why vet visits are so important for cats, especially true once they're taking medications. As Miss Bianca got older, I stayed in the same city for several years, so she had the same vet for the last years of her life, which was really helpful. The vet knew her better than previous vets who saw her once a year for maybe two or three years.

  25. We have been to the vet too often of late. We adopted a beautiful adult Siamese who has had all sorts of issues from health to emotional--none of which the rescue seemed aware of. Bit by bit though we are sorting things out.

I wish I had grown up in a home where you took pets to the vet on a regular basis, sadly I didn't realize how important this was until I was an adult.

Thanks for the reminder and the fun pics of your cats. Mine don't like the vet either.

  26. We go to the vet on a regular basis for annual checkups. With Sophie, we end up going more than once a year because of her allergies. Great info here, thank you!
