National Cat Day 2016

Hello and Happy Saturday Caturday! Today is a great day – it’s National Cat Day!  In 2005 National Cat Day was founded by Pet and Family Lifestyle Expert & Animal Welfare Advocate Colleen Paige to help bring attention to the number of cats that need to be rescued each year. Ever since then National Cat Day is celebrated on October 29 to celebrate cats and help them find forever homes.  Of course we couldn’t resist participating!

National Cat Day

The folks at NationalCatDay.com believe that:

  • Every cat should have a forever home where they are safe, warm, loved, cherished and regarded as FAMILY.
  • Cats are perfect best friends and are among the funniest animals on the planet.
  • Adoption helps reduce the number of unwanted cats that flood shelters and rescues every day.

We couldn’t agree more! Did you know that each year 3.4 million cats enter the shelter? According to the ASPCA, approximately 37% of those cats are adopted and 41% never make it out of the shelter. Less than 5% of cats who come in as strays are returned to their owners. That leaves a whole lot of cats looking for a forever family!

National Cat Day

Today is the purrfect day to adopt a cat! If you’re not ready to make that commitment (and please make sure you are), you can still participate by volunteering at your local shelter or by donating toys, food, blankets, beds and other things on their wish lists. You could even write to your local politicians and ask them to support shutting down cat mills and making all shelters no-kill shelters. (How cool would that be?)

If you already have a cat, brag about how pawesome they are across social media! Go ahead, share those pictures of your beloved cat sitting on your head. You know you have them!

National Cat Day

Even though we lucky kitties are pampered every day, some extra treats and hugs will make today even more special.

How are you and your cat celebrating today?

  9. I celebrated National Cat Day by remembering the day I was adopted from the shelter by my Mom and Dad and how happy I was to find my "FOREVER". I wish everyone could have that kind of happiness....there are too many who are homeless. Every day is National Cat Day!

    Love, Sammy
