5 Things to Consider Before Adopting a Cat

June has arrived and Adopt-A Cat Month has begun. Adopt-a-Cat Month is brought to you by American Humane, the country's first national humane organization. It is celebrated each June, which coincides with prime kitten season. During this time millions of kittens are born, and shelter intakes increase tremendously, putting a huge burden on already limited resources. American Humane is proud to encourage pet lovers to adopt a cat.

In celebration of Adopt-A-Cat Month, we will have a three-part series on the blog this month with information on adopting a cat. Today’s post discusses five things you should consider before adopting a cat.

It's National Backward Day!

Hello and Happy Tuesday! Do you know what today is? Go ahead, take a guess…. OK, never mind, let me just tell you. Today is National Backward Day! According to what I read on the internet, National Backward Day is an opportunity to reverse our ways. This gave me the purrfect idea for a post, and an opportunity to psyche Mommy out at the same time! (And you know that Lexy and I often put our own spin on things, anyway.)

OK, let me set the scene. Lexy is usually the one to sit next to her bowl and look at Mommy with her big dreamy eyes to let her know it’s time to eat. I don’t usually do that – I usually follow Lexy into the kitchen and let her do all the work. I just go along for the ride! So, for Backward Day I thought I’d be the one to remind Mommy it’s nom time!

It's National Opposite Day!

Lola: Hello and Happy Wednesday!

Lexy: Hello, everyone. Not only is today Wednesday, it’s National Opposite Day. A day when people do the opposite of what they mean. Lola and I decided to put our own spin on the day.

Lola: That's right! Lexy and I sharing something that is the opposite of what we usually do. And let me just meow, it will surprise you.

Lexy:  That’s for sure, Lola.  *snickers*

Lola: Can you guess why that photo is the opposite of what we usually do?

Hello and Happy Saturday Caturday! Today is a great day – it’s National Cat Day!  In 2005 National Cat Day was founded by Pet and Family Lifestyle Expert & Animal Welfare Advocate Colleen Paige to help bring attention to the number of cats that need to be rescued each year. Ever since then National Cat Day is celebrated on October 29 to celebrate cats and help them find forever homes.  Of course we couldn’t resist participating!

Clear The Shelters Day 2016 #ClearTheShelters

Hello and happy Saturday Caturday! I’m so happy to be spreading the word about the third annual Clear The Shelters event again this year! Lexy and I just love this day because it’s our wish for all shelters to be empty and for all animals to be with their forever families.  *sigh*… maybe someday the world will be that way.

Until then I’ll spread the word about #ClearTheShelters! Clear the Shelters is a ground-breaking, community-driven initiative which matches deserving animals with loving, permanent homes.  The first Clear The Shelters event was launched in Texas in 2014 through a partnership between NBC in Dallas-Fort Worth and Telemundo.  Over 2,200 animals were adopted in one day through dozens of participating shelters.  How cool is that? Since that event was such a success, Clear The Shelters went nationwide last year.

This year I chose a photo that I believe depicts my gratitude for not only boxes but for this day of celebration.  I hope you like it as much as I do.

National Tabby Day Celebration!

Hello and Happy Wednesday! As I reported not long ago, April 30th was the first ever National Tabby Day!  Mommy went  to the celebration (which was also the book launch for Making the Most of All Nine Lives: The Extraordinary Life of Buffy the Cat) and she gave me a full report which I'm going to share with you.

Unfortunately, Buffy wasn't there. But Sylvester the cat was!

He even posed with author Sandy Robins and Tamar Arslanian of I Have Cat.

World Spay Day 2016

Hello everyone! Did you know that today is World Spay Day?

Launched in 1955, World Spay Day is an annual campaign that encourages people to save animals' lives by spaying and neutering their pets and ferals.   Spaying and neutering saves lives by keeping animals out of shelters – shelters that are often overcrowded and don’t have resources to provide care or find home for all of them.  You know what that means…euthanasia.  According to World Spay Day.org, an estimated 2.4 million animals are put down in shelters each year.  That’s one animal every 13 seconds – cats and dogs who are healthy, treatable, sweet, and would make great companions.

There are many benefits to having your pet spayed/neutered.  Spaying your female pet early in life can help protect them from some serious health problems later in life such as uterine infections and breast cancer. Neutering your male pet can also lessen its risk of developing benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate gland) and testicular cancer. Having ferals spayed/neutered through TNR can reduce the number of cats in your local colonies. Life on the streets for a cat can be rough for a cat, and when a feral finds their way into a shelter, if often does not end favorably.

It's Love Your Pet Day!

Hello and happy Caturday! Did you know that today is Love Your Pet Day? When Lexy and I were meowing about what to post for this day, we decided on something cool.  We polled some of our Facebook friends and asked them how they know their humans love them.  This is what they had to say:

Since I have lost most of my hearing due to old age, when my mother sees me drinking from the water bowl in the kitchen, she will avoid going in there so she doesn't startle me. - Minnie Pearl

My mom brings a can of whipped cream home and gives me a little bit with my wet food! - Gus

We have questions for Mommy

Lola: Well, we're still getting used to blogging. Yesterday, after we posted about National Hug Day, we found it was National Answer Your Cat's Question Day.  Sigh..... we'll get this right some day.
Anyhoo, I'm always thinking of things I want to ask Mommy.

So Lexy and I put together a couple of questions for her.

It's Answer Your Cat's Questions Day!

Today is National Answer Your Cat’s Questions Day!

We love this day because we always have a bunch of stuff to ask Mommy. Lexy and I each chose two questions.
