It's Adopt-A-Cat Month! Change a Cat's Life Today.

Hello and Happy Thursday! Do you know what the month of June is designated as? Go ahead, take a guess… OK, never mind, I’ll just tell you. June is  Adopt-A-Cat Month! Now, since Lexy and I are adopted cats, we couldn’t miss discussing this important topic with you.

Adopt-A-Cat Month is brought to you by American Humane.  Kitten season is here, and that means thousands of kittens are going to join the other millions of cats already in shelters across the country. (I should say that the lucky kittens will make it into the shelter. Not all are so lucky after being born in outside. Read about a kitten that Will rescued off the streets here). This means your local shelter has tons of cute, cuddly newborns, in addition to all the mellow, older cats and everything in between.  We join American Humane in bringing this to the public's attention.  Let's get cats out of shelters and into forever homes!

As you all know, Lexy and I are former shelter cats. I was adopted from Animal Care Centers of NYC  and Lexy was adopted from Hudson Valley Humane Society  Most of you reading this have seen my shelter photo before, but just in case there is someone reading who hasn’t, here it is:

I don’t like to post it over and over again, because I don’t want to make people sad. But I think it’s important for this post topic. (We don’t have a photo of Lexy in the shelter - Mommy wasn't able to find one.) I wrote this in my book: "Well, here I am in the shelter, where they gave me an animal ID number and named me Lola. My name isn’t Lola, but they don’t understand what I’m meowing when I’m trying to tell them my real name. The lady who named me is nice to me, so I’ll let her call me Lola. I’m warm and I have a bowl of food, but I don’t like this cage. I don’t like this place. I want my home". It was a scary time and I'd like to save every cat in the world from this.

I know you’re saying to yourself, “What can I do to help a cat this month?” Well, you’re in the right place! I’ve got a list of tips that you can follow to get involved in this oh-so-important month.

Lola’s Tips on How to get Involved in Adopt-A-Cat Month

1.  Share the message on social media!

This is easy peasy. Just go on a site like Petfinder or Adopt A Pet, choose a cat in a shelter near you, post on your favorite social media channel and say “Look at this beautiful cat who has been in the shelter for (insert time). It’s Adopt-A-Cat month! Let’s find him/her a forever home!”  Or, you could share a photo of your cat that you adopted from a shelter and say “June is Adopt-A-Cat Month. Save a life and adopt a cat like I did”. You can say anything that suits you – you get the idea.

2. Raise funds!

You can donate via your Facebook status by tagging your favorite rescue organization or shelter. Click post, then you will see an option to add a button to confirm that you want to add a donate button. You can also create a campaign with Team ASPCA here.

3. Help a local shelter!

Just about every animal shelter has a wish list. You can find a shelter in your area by searching here. Many shelters have wish lists on Amazon and that means you can help them stock up on much needed supplies right from your couch. You may even have a bunch of stuff you don’t use anymore that would be very much appreciated by the shelter. You can also consider volunteering, even for a day.

4. Foster a cat!

Lots of small rescues depend on fosters. Without them, they would not be able to continue with their rescue efforts.

5. Educate others!

Talk about the importance of adopting a cat with your family and friends. Write a guest blog post about your adopted cat and how much love she has brought into your life. You can also go on Pinterest and find some great visuals about cats, or share some fun cat facts, like this article on Tabby Cats.  By the way, I’m a Mackerel Tabby, in case you were wondering.

6.  I left the best for last, and that’s Adopt a cat of your own!

If you’re not in the position to adopt right now, maybe a friend or family member is. You know what you could do?  You could by an adoption gift certificate for them to pay for the adoption fees. Isn’t that a great gift?

An adopted pet can bring so much joy into your life. We have many Rescue Stories that you can read that may inspire you this month. Please feel free to share them.

Have you ever adopted a cat? Tell us about it!

  8. What an important message! Thanks for that, Lola! I am a rescue kitty, too, and so so glad you and I and Lexy will never ever have to be homeless again! For those that like filling out online surveys, like my mom, SurveyMonkey is an option - it will donate to a listed charity. Not many are pet charities are listed, but Petfinder is one that is. Hugs!

  9. I'm glad you shared your picture again, Lola. People need to see the toll street life has on cats ... it's dangerous and hard. It's easy to villain-ize homeless cats because their struggle is so obvious in their faces - but if people just saw to the heart and soul of the feline ... they'd see the value and beauty your Mommy and I know all kitties have. You and Bear are both very loving ... and it took special people to give you a chance :)

  10. I love cats! My husband is highly allergic and sadly we cannot adopt another though after my last cat passed away. I used to crochet blankets for the animal shelters so that cats and dogs would have something comfortable to rest on. Rescue pets make for the best pets.

  11. Pawsome post! Adopting a cat is one of the most rewarding things a person will ever do. A lifetime of love and gratitude awaits you.

  12. We are giving serious thought to fostering a cat for Chicago Animal Care & Control. I do not have the best track record with fostering - multiple time foster failure. But I really want to give it a try again as I know it is so important and literally saves lives.

  13. I share this on Pinterest. This is SO important and there are so many beautiful loving cuddly cats that need a great forever home! Thank you so much for your part in helping to raise awareness! Meows and purrs to you!

  14. I think it's great to help the kitties to get adopted. I don't know what would happen if we adopted one ... Cookie isn't all that fond of them. Though I have the impression that if the cat was acting friendly and playful Cookie would respond in kind.

  17. Even if you can't adopt a kitty, you can still help out shelters by supporting them in different ways. There are all sorts of fun fundraisers around! Or help them plan one if they don't have one in the works!

  18. Terriic post, we are sharing and tweeting this because it is so great!

Thank you for reminding people there are lots of ways to help, even if you can't adopt a cat right now.

  19. Thanks for sharing the message about June being adopt a cat month! I hope people will consider older cats. Spring - Summer is kitten (and puppy) season and many older pets will get passed over due to the cuteness overload of the kittens or puppies they can't resist. Older cats & dogs may languish in the shelter for much longer.

  24. Great tips and all 3 of my cats in Israel were rescues as that is the only way to do it, I will not pay any breeder anything to get a pet unless I am saving it from abuse

  25. All of the cats I have ever shared my life with have been rescued cats! Adopting a cat is the best feeling in the world. There are some family members that you are just born with in your life, there are others that have chosen to be in your life. Being chosen is a great feeling. I guess it must feel that way for the kitties too.

  26. I just wrote a very disturbing story about a no kill shelter euthanizing a cat for behavior problems. In the back of my mind I remember it was adopt a cat month making it even sadder. But, a lot of people withdrew their support of the formerly no kill shelter to support another one which hopefully means I did some good and that another cat won't be euthanized for being a liability to a shelter.

  30. Fantastic tips for supporting "adopt a cat" month! You know that posting those cute kitten pictures kind of makes you an enabler, right? For a moment, I was seriously considering the logistics of adding a kitten to the crew! For now, I will have to share your post and explore the options you suggest for supporting our local shelters and cat rescues! :-)

  31. Yay for helping to support Adopt a Cat month! What a great lineup of ways people can help! I wish I was able to adopt a cat of my own, but since I can't, I'll try my hardest to help the cats in our community find forever homes in other ways.
