Lola and Lexy's Top Five Reasons to Adopt a Cat

1. You’re Saving More Than One Life

Did you know that when you adopt a cat from a shelter you are actually saving two lives? That’s right, you are! When a cat leaves the shelter to go to its forever home, space is created for another cat to be taken off the street or pulled from a high kill shelter. That’s two lives for the price of one.

A cat adopted from a shelter is given a second chance at life. Every being deserves a second chance at life, especially when an animal finds its way into a shelter at no fault of its own. In our bookLola told readers "I was lucky because I found a fairy godmother who saved me and made sure I got a wonderful life. But not all animals in the shelter have a fairy godmother. I’m just lucky." Wouldn’t you love to be a cat’s fairy godmother or father and give them a wonderful life? It’s a fantastic feeling.

Approximately 860,000 cats are euthanized in shelters every year, many of who are young, healthy, and adoptable. That’s 860,000 too many! This number could be dramatically reduced if people opted to adopt a cat and not buy one.

When you adopt a cat from a shelter, you're not only saving that cat's life, you're also saving another cat's life as well. When you take your new furry family member home, precious space is opened up for the rescue to take in another cat.  Save a life!, (Save TWO lives!), adopt!

There's no way Mother could have resisted THIS when she met me in the shelter!

2. You’re Helping to Fight Pet Overpopulation

According to the ASPCA, approximately 3.2 million cats enter shelters in the U.S. every year. It’s hard to find homes for 3.2 million cats! When a cat is adopted from a shelter the pet overpopulation cycle is weakened because the cat is spayed/neutered and will not reproduce more unwanted animals. Shelter staff can help more cats in need when there are fewer numbers being admitted.

3. You’re Helping to End Cruelty in Mass Breeding Facilities and Pet Stores

We won’t get into a lot of specifics here, but a kitten/puppy mill is a "high volume breeding facility"  that mass produces kittens and puppies. Conditions are often inhumane for the animals being bred, and females are pregnant for most of their lives. Breeders supply pet stores with their animals and conditions there aren’t always the best, either. Adopting from a shelter helps animals avoid being subjected to these conditions and you will not be supporting this industry.

If you are interested in a purebred cat, there are breed specific rescue organizations that specialize in rescuing a specific breed. (Note: We recognize that there are many ethical and honest breeders that take very good care of their cats. If you do choose to get a cat from a breeder, please do your research to make sure they are reputable.)

4. You’re Supporting a Non-Profit Organization That is Important to Your Community

Most shelters/rescues are non-profit organizations whose contributions are vital to their local community for both the four-legged and two-legged. The adoption fee you pay for your new cat aids the shelter/rescue in continuing their work. You can continue to support them post-adoption by sharing your new favorite feline on social media and tagging them, and by bragging about your new furry family member to your non-furry friends and encouraging them to visit that shelter so they can be adopted by the next love of their life.

5. You’ll Have a Never Ending Supply of Unconditional Love

Who doesn’t want unconditional love in their lives? Your adopted cat will give you the unwavering companionship and unconditional love that only a pet can give. Cats don’t care if you’re staying in your pajamas all day during a quarantine, if you need a haircut (or if your new haircut went wrong!), if you ate an entire pint of Ben & Jerry’s, or if you gain 10 pounds. We love you for your heart, and for the love you show us. Our unconditional love is the greatest gift we can give you in return for saving us, and our love for you is limitless. In case you were wondering, yes, we are very grateful to you for saving us and giving us a forever home.

  1. Dear Girls, I know my mommy and my human brothers has treated all of us who came before- and me with the utmost heartfelt love. And believe me...we return that to her 10 fold. IT's a win-win.

  2. Lola and Lexy speak the truth once again!! And that bottom photo is absolutely adorable. You can just feel the love.

  3. We will always adopt, Lola and Lexy, and probably in pairs too, if possible!

  4. Those are all great reasons to adopt a cat. Do you know I was adopted?? ~Ernie

  5. Those are all very good reasons to adopt a cat ! Purrs

  6. They are all very good reasons for adopting. That last photo is so sweet.

  7. Excellent post! I have adopted many of my cats from shelters- and the rest appeared in my yard and we kept them. XO

  8. I can't love this post enough!

  9. Those are all such awesome reasons to adopt a kitty, Lola and Lexy! Hey, we're adopted, too! Love, Gracie and Ava. XO

  10. Great info, and what great illustrations! Adoption should be the only way to go. All my kitties have been adopted.

  11. Those are all awesome reasons to choose cat adoption! Since I'm unable to adopt (my partner has severe cat allergies), I do what I can to support our local rescues in other ways.

  12. I so agree and only will adopt, even my cats when I lived in Israel, it is so important

  13. Very good reasons to adopt! Especially the unconditional love that cats have to give where ever they come from.

  14. Adopting two abandoned kitties was the best thing that happened to my mom. Particularly since she wouldn't be able to walk a dog.

  15. I love this! We have 2 rescue dogs and 2 rescue cats in our house. We even went as far as driving to Ohio to pick up our youngest dog, Indiana, from Ohio. Here in Ontario, kill shelters aren't the concern that they are there. We wanted to make the biggest impact that we could and that was a solution.

  16. All of these are so important and all of them matter.

The MOST important. Spay or Neuter your damned cat (Not sorry) Get the cat to stop making more unwanted kittens, causing distress to many and ending up in a kill shelter.

  17. We think it's great when people are able to adopt a cat to help bring unconditional love into their homes.
