Monmouth County SPCA Helps Others #SeeTheLight for Shelter Cats - #RememberMeThursday 2020

Ever since I adopted Lola in January 2011, I've made it a point to advocate for shelter cats and encourage adoption. In addition to our blog, I accomplish this through our Facebook page, our book, and through being a contributing writer for the Jackson Galaxy Project's Cat Pawsitive Pro Program. It brings me great joy to write about how shelters and rescues work hard to shine a light on cats who may be considered "unadoptable" so they are not forgotten and forced to live their lives in a shelter setting.

Create a Litter Box Privacy Zone with PetFusion

I’m in the middle of a “catification” project in my apartment, and one of the areas I needed to take a good look at and change was the litter box area. Lola and Lexy’s litter box is in the living room. It was previously in a boxed-in corner, and if one of them decided to engage in “litterbox stalking” the other was pretty much trapped. And the tracking! Oh, the tracking! Even though I use a good, low tracking litter, it would still get on my carpet. It was also placed next to a bookcase that I would frequently need something from, and when I had to open it I would have to move the box. We all needed an update!

The CWA 2019 Certificate of Excellence Winners are Announced and We're Very Surprised!

The Cat Writers’ Association has announced the winners for their 2019 Communications Contest. Last year I was very surprised at the results for myself and the blog, but this time I was completely blown away! This year I won 14 Certificates of Excellence for the 15 entries I submitted. I’m very excited to share the top spot with my good friend Deb Barnes of Zee and Zoey. I have admired Deb and her work for many years and thought I could only aspire to be her equal in any way. Creating a COVID-19 Preparedness Plan for Your Cat

Depending on where you live in the country, having a COVID-19 plan for your cat (or any pet) may be a good idea. It is something I actually didn’t think about until I was doing research for another post and came across some information. And quite honestly, I didn't want to think about it. The thought of not being here for my girls is terrifying, but something I know I need to be prepared for. This may be a little late, but if you live in an area that still has a high number of cases it is something to consider.

I have been extremely fortunate during this pandemic and lockdown in New York State – I’m able to work both of my jobs from home, and I'm still bringing in my salary (something I give thanks for every day.) Lola, Lexy, and I have everything we need, and as usual, my girls want for nothing. But what would happen to them in a sudden emergency?

Working From Home With Cats - Part 1

Hello, everyone. This is Lexy checking in. It has been quite some time since I've taken over the blog, and I must say it's been just too long! I've missed chatting with you all.

Today starts Mother's fifth week at home while New York is paused. Just like in most states, humans here are practicing social distancing and unless they are essential employees they are supposed to stay home. Mother is very lucky and very grateful to be able to continue her job from home. I've decided to start a little series on the blog called "Working From Home With Cats" because, in my opinion, Mother is very lucky to have me as an assistant.

Will You Adopt Me? Meet Cinnamon - A Sassy, Smart Lady at Monmouth County SPCA

I’m sure most of you know by now that I am a contributing writer for the Jackson Galaxy Project’s Cat Pawsitive Pro Program. It’s a project that I absolutely love volunteering for because I love seeing cats who were previously considered “unadoptable” find their happy forever homes. From time to time I also form a great relationship with one of my assigned shelters and I love keeping in touch with them. Although the semester is just starting, I’m already forming a wonderful relationship with Monmouth County SPCA in Eatontown, NJ.

When Nina Lucow, their Feline Adoption Manager, sent me a draft of their first report I immediately fell in love with the cat, and knew I just had to share her story on the blog and all over social media to help her find her forever home. I’m elated to introduce you to Cinnamon, a beautiful orange Tabby girl with a little bit of cattitude.

Rescue Stories - Donovan: He Found the Love of His Life in a McDonald's Parking Lot

Recently a dear friend, that I met through the Facebook cat community just after I started my Facebook page, passed away. When I asked for rescue story submissions for my book Sherry was one of the first people to contact me. Her beloved cat, Donovan, was a rescue and she was very excited to share his story with the world. And she was so grateful to me for including his story so his spirit would live on through my book. She didn’t realize how grateful I was to her for sharing her story with me.

Sherry had a big heart. She was kind and giving and never turned a cat (or a person) in need away. I wanted to pay homage to her in some way, so I decided to share Donovan’s story on the blog for those of you who have not read it. Donovan made his journey to the bridge a few years ago, and I know he jumped into Sherry’s arms when she made her transition. Sherry, I will forever miss you. Until we meet again, my friend.

This is Sherry's story as told to me in 2013.

Catnip Nation, Award Winning Documentary, Now Available on DVD

In May of 2017, I introduced Catnip Nation to my readers. As I waited (not so) patiently for the film, Director and Producer Tina Traster contributed thought-provoking and heartfelt articles for my blog. (The Catnip Nation series won a Certificate of Excellence in the Cat Writers' Association Communications Contest last year.) When the time finally came to see the film I was SO excited, and it did not disappoint. Catnip Nation is now an award-winning film, and it is also available on DVD.
