How I "Catified" My Small, Rented Apartment

I have always been envious of people who can create the ultimate catifed environment, complete with perches, shelves, and superhighways. I always thought Lola and Lexy could not have a catified home because I live in a rental and I'm not able to make any permanent changes. Well, I was wrong! When I was at Cat Camp NYC last year, I attended a presentation given by the fabulous Kate Benjamin of Hauspanther entitled "Catification Challenge: How to Catify When You Rent."

Kate's presentation inspired me to write a post about catifying small, rented spaces. After drafting the post, I decided to take it a step further and make changes to my own apartment to show our readers that it can be done. Read on to see how I catified my rented apartment.

Book Review: Heroic, Helpful and Caring Cats: Felines Who Make a Difference by Anne E. Beall

Today I am very excited to tell you about a wonderful book Heroic, Helpful and Caring Cats; Felines Who Make a Difference, that I am honored to be featured in along with Lola.

I met The author, Anne E. Beall, Ph.D., in July 2019 when I attended Meow Meet Up in Chicago. In her workshop, “How Cats Help Humans”, Anne shared her foray into the world of rescue and advocacy by telling the audience how she became a managed colony caretaker with Tree House Humane Society in Chicago through their Cats at Work program. When Anne asked attendees to share personal stories about how their cats help them and have made a difference in their lives, I knew I had to share Lola’s story with her.

Selfie Sunday November 2020

Hello, and Happy Sunday! Oh boy, Lexy and I are excited to be participating in Selfie Sunday today. We haven't had the chance to join in quite a while because of Mommy's schedule.  We're so excited to share our selfies with you today.

This is me, enjoying a sunny day in the window. I love watching the world from the window, seeing what's going on in our neighborhood.

Don't tell anyone, but I like spying on the doggie next door.

Lexy decided on doing a super close up selfie today.

She also did a glamour photoshoot a few days ago. Maybe she'll share those soon.

5 Tips to Catify Your Small or Rented Home

Space in most city apartments is limited and unless you own your apartment, drilling holes into walls and making other permanent changes are not always possible. This can make catifying your home a little challenging, but not impossible. There are a ton of alternate solutions, and with an open mind and a little creativity, your cat can be living a "catified" life in no time.

If you’re worried about looking like the stereotypical “crazy cat person”, fear no more. I have five tips to help you catify your home in a way that are environmentally enriching for your cat and aesthetically pleasing to the human eye.

Monmouth County SPCA Helps Others #SeeTheLight for Shelter Cats - #RememberMeThursday 2020

Ever since I adopted Lola in January 2011, I've made it a point to advocate for shelter cats and encourage adoption. In addition to our blog, I accomplish this through our Facebook page, our book, and through being a contributing writer for the Jackson Galaxy Project's Cat Pawsitive Pro Program. It brings me great joy to write about how shelters and rescues work hard to shine a light on cats who may be considered "unadoptable" so they are not forgotten and forced to live their lives in a shelter setting.

Create a Litter Box Privacy Zone with PetFusion

I am in the middle of a “catification” project in my apartment, and one of the areas I needed to take a good look at and change was the litter box area.

Lola and Lexy’s litter box is in the living room. Previously it was in a boxed-in corner, and if one of them decided to engage in some “litter box stalking” the other was pretty much trapped. And the tracking! Oh, the tracking! Even though I use a good, low tracking litter, it would still get on my carpet and all over my furniture. It was also right in front of a bookcase that I would frequently need something from, and I would have to move the box to open the door. We all needed an update!
