Paws Together for Texas: How to Help Animals Affected by Harvey

As Hurricane Harvey continues to wreak devastation on Texas, our thoughts and prayers go out to all who have been affected by this disaster. As happens all too often during a natural disaster, not all shelters allow pets. This leaves many families having to make difficult decisions. Some pets end up in shelters (hopefully temporarily until they can be reunited with their families), some are abandoned, and some are lost. Let’s not forget the animals who are in shelters in the affected areas, as well as the number of homeless animals living on the street.

Thanks to Ann of Zoolatry for this graphic

We’ve put together a list of some organizations that are working to help these animals.

As of Saturday, they have transported over 330 animals to their shelter and were expecting 50 - 100+ within the next 48 hours. They are in need of funding, fosters for cats and dogs, volunteers, adopters and in-kind donations. (Currently, the top needed resources are cat litter, collars, tarps, treats, and bowls.) For a full list of items they need, visit their site, or you can donate here.

Their greatest needs right now are crates, bedding, puppy and kitten formula, and dog waste bags. Visit their Facebook page for updates

This was posted on their Facebook page: Do you have dog/cat food/treat donations for Houston's evacuees and their pets or for animal shelters around the Houston, Texas area? Please contact Jodie Jones Eisenhardt at (713)818-7508 or Jodie@twochickscommunications.com. She is an amazing RPM foster and volunteer who has secured warehouse space to take all incoming donations. Please contact her now! Thank you!

  13. This is the best list of places to help I've found! I can't imagine having to make the choice between shelter and one's furbabies. I heard about that the last couple years in Oklahoma. The public tornado shelters refused to allow people's pets - so people either had to leave them outside or stay with them and forgo shelter. I can't even imagine it with a longer-term shelter situation (weeks or months) like here.
