Cat Pawsitive Pro Program Helps Cats Get Adopted!

Hello, and Happy Monday! Today we have something spectacular to share with you! We are so excited to have the opportunity to work with The Jackson Galaxy Project, a Signature Program of GreaterGood.org, to tell you about a fab program that helps improve the lives of cats at risk in shelters. We’ve got so much information to share with you, I don’t know where to start!

Cat Pawsitive Pro Helps Cats Get Adopted!

Developed by Jackson Galaxy and a team of animal behavior experts, the Cat Pawsitive Pro Program is a groundbreaking project that helps cats in shelters to find their “mojo” and their forever homes. If you’re a long-time reader of Lola The Rescued Cat you know that projects like this mean the world to us, because Lexy and I are former shelter cats. Lexy was in the shelter for almost a year before our mom found her. When they first met, our mom couldn’t even take Lexy out of her cage and pick her up. She was barely able to pet her! But Mom didn’t care – she fell in love with Lexy immediately and knew they were meant to be together. Unfortunately, it doesn’t happen that way for all cats in a shelter.

Shelters can be very overwhelming for cats. Shy cats may hide under blankets or in the corner of their cages, and cats who are stressed out may sit in their litter boxes. Frightened cats may even lash out at people trying to pet them. Potential adopters like to see friendly, sociable, cuddly cats and when they see certain behaviors they may consider that cat to be “less adoptable.

That’s really not the case! Some cats just need some reassurance to feel safe and some encouragement to interact with people in a safe, positive manner. That’s where Cat Pawsitive Pro comes in!

Cat Pawsitive training applies positive, reward-based clicker training that positively reinforces good behaviors. This helps a “shy cat can learn to feel comfortable coming up to the front of her cage to meet a potential pet parent, a feisty cat can learn to play nice, and an outgoing kitty can even learn to give an endearing "high five" to his visitors.”  It also reduces the stressors that might keep a cat from connecting with a potential adopter and can seal the adoption deal! Cat Pawsitive Pro helps cats gain confidence and get mental and physical stimulation, thus forming connections with staff, volunteers, and potential adopters. How pawtastic is that?!?

Cat Pawsitive Pro is in its Third Year!

In 2016 the Jackson Galaxy Project chose nine shelters across America to be a part of the inaugural class of the Cat Pawsitive initiative. These Cat Pawsitive shelters:

  • Participated in training webinars with the team of feline behavior experts
  • Had direct access to consultations with the trainer-mentors during the program
  • Received exclusive JGP training tools, handouts, and videos
  • Received national exposure through the social media outlets of Jackson Galaxy and JGP

Cat Pawsitive Pro was so popular that it has expanded for 2018 and will serve the largest number of shelters yet. There will also be two classes, one in Spring and one in Fall, to meet the demand. Isn't that fantastic? You can get a list of participating shelters here

Cat Pawsitive Pro in Action!

Let me introduce you to Dorian. Dorian was one scared kitty when he entered the shelter, but thanks to Cat Pawsitive Pro training, he came out of his shell and enjoyed life. Can you guess what the best part of his story is? I'll let you see for yourself... just watch this video.

Dorian found his forever home! Success!

You can make a donation to support Cat Pawsitive here. If you know of a shelter who would like more information about future classes, they can email The Jackson Galaxy Project at jgp@greatergood.org.

We hope a shelter near us participates in the future because our mom would love to visit and see this fab program in action up close and personal!

  8. I'm glad that programs like this are being put into place. Personally, I'm drawn to the shy, the feisty, etc. I know the shelter is just overwhelming to so many kitties. It's sad that not everyone realizes that. Maybe this program will also help raise awareness about this.

  11. I loved seeing you again, Dawn. Thank you.
I love this program. I had no idea Lexy wouldn't let you pet her at the beginning. Both of mine were overly friendly from the start and I probably take that for granted. For Bear though, he's only like that around me.
