Rescue Stories: Marcy - After Being Abandoned She Found Her New Best Friend

When I was at the BlogPaws conference last month in Phoenix, I was chatting with the owners of Savage Cat Food. This company was so familiar to me, and I didn’t know why (especially since Lola and Lexy do not eat raw food.)  After thinking more about it that night I was pretty sure I was able to explain the mystery.  The next day when I went to the booth I held up my phone showing the Instagram account of Meow Marcie and said “is this your cat?” When I got a laugh I knew my puzzle was solved.  Joseph and I had started to connect on Instagram because I was interested in hearing Marcie’s rescue story, but then lost touch. I was pleased to reconnect with him at BlogPaws, and delighted when he agreed to share Marcie’s story for my Rescue Story series on my blog. (You all know how much I enjoy a good rescue story!) Read on to see how a beautiful little calico kitten changed his life, and how Marcie went from eating trash to being a food tester for high quality cat food.

Marcie's pretty profile
As I reflect on life’s blessings these last few years, none of them compare to the surprise kitten I adopted who became my best friend.

Almost exactly one year ago, my business partners were alerted to an abandoned calico kitten in their neighborhood. She was crying so frantically and loudly that neighbors heard her and brought her to the people they knew made cat food. My partners brought the kitten home to feed her, and the minute I saw her I said, “Hey, my cat!”

It is unclear if Marcie was abandoned by her mom or by humans, but it seemed as though she had been eating trash for a while. The first day she was with us, she smelled like trash; her actual body scent was of refuse. Now she is our food tester, and so far we haven’t found anything that she doesn’t like. Marcie would eat 20% of her weight in food on a daily basis if we let her.

Before meeting Marcie, I had no intentions of owning pets anytime soon, although I loved animals. At 32, I valued the independence and flexibility that comes from being single and pet free. When my partners brought home this cat my perspective immediately changed. I gave her a bath and named her Marcie after one of my favorite cartoon characters.

Marcie enjoys the outdoors
Since that first surprise visit, she has been a priceless blessing, giving me more than I could ever give her. Her existence is inherently therapeutic and I am always happy to come home to hang out with the world’s coolest cat.

As part owner of a cat related company, Marcie has brought meaning to my daily endeavor to provide cats everywhere with high quality options. She is more than happy in being part of my family. If you are considering getting a cat, I highly recommend adoption. You aren’t just adopting a cat, you are adopting a friend.

  1. I loved hearing Marcie's story! I have to say, those calico and tortie cats, they just go out and get what they want! Binga was the same as Marcie, screaming for attention in her cage at the Los Angeles downtown ACC, and the cat before Sparkle picked up my human on the streets of San Pedro. They're quite powerful, even as kittens!

  2. What a wonderful story. Her smelling like trash reminds us of cats from hoarding situations. Whatever her past, her future is bright and happy with her human, and that's what counts!

  21. Beautiful story! I remember the man because he was one of the most friendly people I met throughout the conference! I wish I'd known at the time so he could have told me about Marcie then! Bear was homeless and he chose me. Neither of us was sure about the arrangement at first, but we couldn't walk away either. Ten years and a happy life later, I'm glad my heart was open enough to hear his heart choosing mine. And I'm glad he overcame his shyness to make the call.

  22. Marcie is adorable! She sure landed on her feet, "working" for a cat food company.

  23. What a great story! Our cat Rosie was found abandoned at a similar age and she, like Marcie, would eat her weight in food if we let her. So glad they found each other and I will check them out on instagram, too.

  24. I recently lost my cat of 17 years to kidney failure. People have asked me if I'm getting another (it's too soon). I say no, I don't get my pets, the universe brings them to me. Marcie arrived when you needed her to.

    1. I lost Nala at 17.5 last year to kidney failure. We rescued her as a tiny filthy kitten left in an open box on the road by the bus stop near my house. Her 2 siblings went to other homes and did not make it.

  29. Not sure whether it was Joseph, but I had a great interaction with a couple Savage people at BlogPaws, too. I tried to convince them to enter the Richmond, VA market. :)

Love this (and every) cat adoption story! Thanks for publishing it and for alerting me to Marcie's IG page so I can follow along!

  32. What a great story!! We never really think that the photos we see on a label are pets that really DO exist! The most fun for me, was seeing a really cool guy that owns Marcie!! Real men own cats!! So glad he's giving Marcie a happily ever after!!
